German manufacturers have this weird habit of trying to compete with each other over every small segment. It's the death of creativity and means you will rarely see an outside-the-box machine like this 8 Series Touring.
It's not only hurting the customers but also the brands, as developing dozens of cars for tiny segments isn't profitable, with examples of this including several coupe or convertible models. You might think the four-doors are an exception, but Mercedes only managed to shift about 1,000 CLS-Class examples per month in Europe.
Despite this, BMW just pulled the wraps the 8 Series Gran Coupe, which has been under road development for over a year. and the reaction to it wasn't as good as when the M850i Coupe came out. The reason? It's somehow not as well proportioned as the old 6 Series, probably because they wanted to increase headroom too much.
We believe that a Shooting Brake would have been a far better idea, despite the fact that wagons aren't selling in America. Still, it's not like this model will turn a huge profit, so why not come up with some kind of original shape people weren't expecting? Where's the creativity that sparked the i8? Probably working for the Koreans or something.
While the chances of an 8 Series Touring ever reaching production are pretty low, BMW's history is littered with employees who defied their bosses. That's how we got the touring models in the first place, not to mention the clown-shoe Z4 Coupe.
The rendering made by X-Tomi Design is something we can get behind, featuring styling elements that are familiar from the new 3 Series wagon. But we still don't think it's as sporty as it could be. A unique project like this needs standard 22-inch wheels and crazy aero. Somebody needs to make a supercar shaped like a wagon.
