Since everyone is calling the new 3 Series GT a "bigger and rather useless" version of the Touring, the guys from Auto Motor und Sport decided to test the 2 cars at the same in order to decide which is best and how they differ from one another.
They went to Italy to test the family cars and went up in the mountains to do so. They measured everything, from the ride height to the loading space and, even though both cars had the same engine, they had to test the agility and sportive character too.
The diesel 2-liter units of the cars develop 184 HP and 380 Nm (280 lb-ft) of torque and they are set aside just by 75 kg in the weight department, the GT being the heavier one.
The Touring offers less space in the back and during the test, the GT managed to take up between 25 and 100 liters more luggage. The tailgate of the latter seemed more practical too and the headroom, especially in the back, was considerably better.
As everyone before them said, the 3 Series GT really has to be bought with the M-Technic Adaptive Dampers option. It completely changes the car and, when activated, it reminds you that, even though you can cruise comfortably with all your family, you're still driving a BMW.
There are few things that separate the two. However, the GT is more stylish than the Touring and seems to be closer to a 5 Series than a 3er. On the other hand, the other contestant in this review is more agile and has a more sporty feel and that is understandable considering it has a lower center of gravity, it weighs less and is shorter than it's more expensive brother.
