Ever since BMW announced the new F31 3 Series Touring, European customers have been curious about the performance of the 320d, the most popular Touring version sold by the Bavarian manufacturer. AutoMotorUndSport tested the 3er to clear things up.
The top diesel option for the Touring 3 Series is the 330d that comes with a 3-liter 6-cylinder 258 HP and 413 lb-ft (560 Nm) of torque engine, capable of pushing the family car to 100 km/h (62 mph) in just 5.4 seconds. However, with a starting price of €46,500 ($59,600) it's not exactly easy to obtain.
Going for the 320d you'll save up to €7,000 ($8,900) but you'll also have to give up on 2 cylinders and some horsepower. The smaller diesel has 184 HP and 280 lb-ft (380 Nm) of torque but don't be fooled. Even with this combination, the car is quite agile and sprints to 100 km/h in 7.7 seconds.
Furthermore, the fuel consumption numbers will make you proud of choosing this particular one, especially when pulling into a gas station. Over the entire test, the overall fuel efficiency recorded was 6.7 l/100km (35.1 mpg) which was a somewhat over the official numbers (4.9 l/100km, 48 mpg) but it's still impressive.
With adaptive dampers, the ride is extremely comfortable for long journeys and it features tremendous agility. The interior has been significantly improved from the previous E91 Series and is now drastically more practical.
The only weak point was the rather disappointing payload rated at only 376 kg, which is less than its competitors. Other than that, the 320d Touring is an affordable dream combo.
