If somebody were to write a sad story based on the automotive universe, he could do a lot worse than what happened to Billy Crider, a real estate agent from Ohio.
It’s safe to say that Billy is a true petrolhead, but he just lacked the financial means necessary to pursue his dreams. Then, one day - and I’m trying really hard here not to say “he got a stroke of luck” - he was hit by a drunk driver, got a settlement and suddenly found himself with some cash in his pocket.

Did he have other more pressing matters to attend to than buying a very rare used car that isn’t famous for its excellent fuel efficiency? Perhaps, but as we’ve already established, Billy is a petrolhead. So he went out and bought a Nissan Skyline. It was a red, JDM example in perfect condition and you can only imagine how happy Billy must have felt.

However, his joy was to be short-lived, as only two and a half months later, a stupid, minor accident requested the intervention of the insurance company that saw to the 11-digit VIN, and that marked the beginning of the end. Roughly a week later, Billy found out that his car had been illegally imported in the US and had to be destroyed.

SpeedSociety.com, the website reporting this story, insists on the fact that during the short period he owned this right-hand-drive Skyline, Billy was always ready to share the experience with anyone interested in checking out the R33. He would just toss the keys and let anybody drive it. That kind of attitude makes the fate of this car - and Billy’s dream - even more difficult to stomach.

Now, wouldn’t it be nice if somebody started a crowd funding campaign in order to get enough money for Billy to buy another car? If he’s really the great guy that this story portrays him to be, he surely deserves it. That’s something to think about.

Further down you can watch the sad clip of the car getting crushed at the scrap yard. I’ll never understand why they have to make this process so long and so personal. It’s like that heavy duty equipment is toying with the car the same way a cat plays with its prey before eating it. What’s the point of that forklift poking it? You almost get the feeling that after all this time, the people operating these machines still feel some sort of perverted pleasure out of destroying those poor cars.
