Bentley Thieves Betrayed by VW Key

Piece of advice for wannabe car thieves: do not underestimate custom agents' knowledge of autos and their features. 'Cause if you do, you might end up like these two Ukrainians, with a pending criminal record.

The story starts a bit like this: two individuals try to enter Romania, coming from the neighboring Hungary, aboard a 2007 Bentley Continental Flying Spur. The car, as custom agents later learned, had been stolen in April this year, and was on route to Bulgaria, where it was expected by a mysterious someone.

Things would have gone just as planned for the two suspects, provided they didn't run into an auto-literate Romanian customs agent. As the car was getting ready to enter the country (in the EU, cross-border traveling can be done with no check, provided nothing suspicious calls otherwise), the customs' agent noticed the Bentley had in the ignition a set of keys wearing the... VW logo.

This prompted him to stop the car and ask the driver for his and the car's papers. The driver complied, but the papers didn't: both the car's registration and the driver's license were fake.

"When the officers noticed the logo on the car keys, they began researching the vehicle. They found the car is featured in the Interpol database as stolen in Germany since April this in year," Mihaela Les, spokeswoman for the Arad police department told Click.

The car has been seized, while the driver is currently under investigation for concealment of theft, complicity to commit theft, driving without a license and driving a vehicle with fake registration.
