Red Bull Confirm Focus on Reliability

Red Bull Racing were regarded as the team to beat for several races since the beginning of the season, yet the Austrian team is not leading the championship and the first two positions in the drivers standings belong to McLaren champions Lewis Hamilton and Jenson Button.

After 8 rounds, it seems that the guys at Milton Keynes have finally gotten to the bottom of this issue. Ever since the season started, with the exception of a couple of races, at least one of the two Red Bull drivers experienced reliability issues with their RB6. The latest problems occurred in Canada, where Mark Webber dropped 5 places on the grid in order to have his gearbox changed, while Sebastian Vettel experienced gearbox issues in the last part of the race.

Red Bull's Webber admitted that these reliability problems have their roots in the pre-season testing period, when the team focused more on performance rather than reliability.

We elected to run the car when we did in testing because that is the decision we made. We could have done a bit more reliability work and you may say the car would not have been so fast, but it is a long, long season,” said the 33-year old Australian in an interview with AAP news agency, in Valencia.

The motorsport advisor for Red Bull, Dr. Helmut Marko, partially admitted to the same strategy this weekend, when confirming to the Kleine Zeitung newspaper that the team's next focus is improving the reliability of the RB6.

The direction of our development has changed somewhat. The reliability is now the priority,” said Marko.
