Audi Motorsport has defended its World Endurance Championship title in Japan, at the end of race that was interrupted after only sixteen laps behind the safety car due to difficult weather conditions.
Although the victory was given to Toyota’s No.7 car, who was leading the pack when the stewards decided to end the Fuji race, Audi took seconds place and enough points to seal the Manufacturers’ championship early, with two more rounds to go. After six races, Audi, with five wins and one second place, has 164 points, 66.5 more than Toyota, its only contender in the sports prototypes class.
“We’d very much have liked to offer a great race to the many enthusiastic Japanese fans. Unfortunately, the weather today prevented this. Nobody can be blamed for this. And that the race was ultimately stopped was the only reasonable decision – safety always takes top priority. We’re happy about the World Championship title even though we’d have liked to have clinched it under different circumstances. I’m sure that the Japanese fans can look forward to a great sports car race at Fuji next year,” said Dr. Wolfgang Ullrich, head of Audi Motorsport.
