Audi must have taken another look at the R8 supercar and said "hang on, that's really cool," because we got an epic new racing version out of nowhere. This is called the R8 LMS GT2 and it looks like a million euros, even though it costs a third of that.
Like many debuts of the week, the GT2 made its dynamic debut at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. Where else would you show a 200mph, 640 HP than in front of some duke's old house, right?

We think the LMS GT2 is one of the wildest debuts at 2019 FoS, having much of its bodywork decorated in neon yellow trim... even the tires. It's most striking from the front, where a huge intake was opened up where the grille would normally have been. This looks like the mouth of some tropical fish or a poisonous squid. Honestly, it looks way more interesting than the GT3 class car.

And in case the racing R8 needed even more downforce, the back sports an extra-wide wing and a large diffuser. Both are painted neon, of course, as is the roof scoop. And she's a real screamer, as is the case when the V10 engine isn't restricted by street exhaust regulations.

For the record, the GT2 class allows up to 700 horsepower, while the GT3, which is supposed to be faster, tops out at 500 HP> Obviously, it's not just more powerful, but also ligher than a standard R8 at 1,350 kilos dry or 2,976 lbs. But unlike many other race cars that look like the R8, this is still based around the road-going chassis, with some hardcore CFRP aero added in.

“This sports car with its emotive high-performance V10 engine marks the top end of our customer racing program. The legendary event at Goodwood is the ideal venue for unveiling such a fascinating sports car,” says Oliver Hoffmann, Audi Sport CEO.
