Audi has had a very successful launch with the Q8 flagship model, proving it's on the right track for SUV domination. However, it needs more derivatives if it wants to compete with BMW and Mercedes, and it looks like the Q4 is next on the agenda.
In an interview with Autocar magazine, head of exterior design Andreas Mindt not only revealed that the sportier version of the Q3 is on its way but also stated that it would be “a bit more than a coupe version of the Q3, to my eyes a lot more”.

He did not, however, go into too much detail. But we already love the second-generation Q3 with its over-complicated and quite sporty design. Of course, the Audi official may also be referring to the way BMW and Mercedes have made Sports Activity Coupes such as the GLE Coupe and X6, carrying over too much of the old design.

Of course, since the Q8 looks nothing like the Q7, we kind of expected the same thing to be true here. The same story also claims that the Q4 would be about 4.5 meters long, but it's an updated version of a 2016 article with outdated information. Only the quote is new, but it tells us Audi is officially planning a new SUV model and it should be ready by the end of next year.

The Q4 has been around for quite some time, having been trademarked before the diesel emissions scandal. Audi even built a few concepts, including one that was supposed to slot into the TT family, but funding for the whole thing was cut.

Now Andreas Mindt says the final design is nearing approval and production will take place alongside the regular Q3 at the Gyor factory in Hungary. Details around price and especially availability aren't available at the moment, but the Q4 might even have a 400 horsepower RS version. Rivals will include the Range Rover Evoque, BMW X2 and Volvo XC40.
