Ever since it launched the e-tron SUV in 2018, Audi made a statement that this time, following years of very ineffective EVs wearing the name, electric power is here to stay. Encouraged by the perceived success of the SUV, the carmaker committed to launching even more variants in the coming years, starting with the coupe version of last year’s car.
It’s been known for some time the bluky e-tron will get a sexier variant, one that could easily propel the four-rings brand closer to the desired status of premiere electric carmaker. And now we know exactly when the new e-tron will be unveiled.

In a surprise announcement made on Monday (November 18), Audi said it will unveil the e-tron Sportback in about 36 hours’ time, at an even in Los Angeles, where the local auto show is scheduled to begin at the end of the week.

No other details about the car were provided, apart from the teaser photo showing the camouflaged, sexy back of the lowered SUV.

The biggest, most important change when it comes to this car compared to the existing model has to do with body styles. As far as the car’s performances go, don’t expect any major surprises.

The Germans will go for the tried-and-tested powertrain deployed in the e-tron. There are two batteries now on offer, a 95 kW one fitted in the 55 quattro (355 hp and 561 Nm) with a range of 248 miles (400 km), and the 71 kWh unit in the 50, good for 186 miles (300 km).

It’s unclear now which of the two will be available from the start, but chances are it will be the most capable configuration.

All the other e-tron goodies, including the energy recuperation system used to generate electricity from the car's braking system and feed it back to the battery, are likely to be transplanted to the Sportback.
