Is someone over at Aston Martin a huge Dragon Ball Z fan? Probably, but the latest trademark application filed by the British manufacturer doesn’t necessarily translate into a new model. Or does it?
It isn’t worth to read anything specific into the said mark for a rather simple reason: automakers have a habit of registering nameplates for the hell of it and out of caution. Lest we forget, Aston Martin was forced to change the name of a track-focused model because Porsche called dibs on the GT3 name.
Then again, I might be wrong. You see, Aston Martin is preparing to launch a lot of new models in the following years, including an electric variant of the Rapide, a hypercar co-developed with Red Bull Racing, a crossover inspired by the DBX Concept, and so on.
Auto Guide, the first publication to unravel the trademark, notes that DBZ could be used for a Zagato-styled model. Speaking of which, Aston Martin presented the Vanquish Zagato Concept at the 2016 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Is the timing a coincidence? As much as I hate the orange ascot tie worn by Fred Jones, it looks like we have a(nother) mystery on our hands.
According to the filing available on the E.U. Intellectual Property Office website, the trademark is classified under “passenger cars; racing cars; car bodies,” and the date of receipt is June 1, 2016. The Concorso d’Eleganza started on May 20, when the Aston Martin Vanquish Zagato Concept was presented on the shores of Lake Como, Italy. Simply put, it took Aston Martin a little over a week to decide what to do.
On an ending note, it would be great if Aston Martin were to send off the Vanquish with a limited run styled by an Italian coachbuilding outfit. On a funnier note, a Dragon Ball Z wrap sounds like a great idea.
Editor's note: Z follows right after X. DBX, DBZ, get what I mean?
