In the full-size luxury SUV segment, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles doesn’t have anything to offer while Ford and Lincoln dropped V8s for the EcoBoost V6. If you’re in the market for eight brawny cylinders and an American badge, your go-to automaker is General Motors with the Chevrolet, GMC, and Cadillac brands.
The latter has rolled out the all-new Escalade in February 2020 for the 2021 model year, and at long last, the order books are open. Including destination charge, the standard-length V8 with rear-wheel drive costs $77,490.
GM Authority reports the extended-length Escalade ESV is $3,000 more, but curiously enough, Super Cruise isn’t available in the first instance. Updated with much pomp and circumstance at the beginning of the year as Enhanced Super Cruise, the technological suite will be offered in the second half of 2020.
Introduced not that long ago in the CT6 full-size sedan, Super Cruise now works on more than 200,000 miles of highways in the U.S. and Canada. The latest update brings automated lane changing, improved functionality through interchanges and turns, better steering and speed control, and more intuitiveness.
In addition to the 420-horsepower V8 engine with Dynamic Fuel Management and Stop/Start functionality, the Escalade can also be specified with… wait for it… a 3.0-liter turbo diesel that General Motors offers as an option in half-ton pickup trucks. The Duramax straight-six motor matches the torque of the small-block V8 but delivers it much sooner at 1,500 rpm instead of 4,100 revolutions.
Both engine choices are paired to the 10L80 automatic transmission from the Hydra-Matic family, and both share 3.23 gearing for the final drive. The Escalade and Escalade ESV are available in no fewer than five trim levels, starting with Luxury. The lineup then branches off into the Premium Luxury and Sport, and at the very top of the spectrum, we have the Premium Luxury Platinum and Sport Platinum.
The latter trim levels start at $103,040 for rear-wheel drive and the standard wheelbase. For reference, the Lincoln Navigator Black Label is $98,430 ($97,135 plus $1,295 for the destination charge), making it slightly more affordable.
