Alfa Romeo 169 to Use Dodge Charger Platform

Alfa Romeo is still working on its future 169 project and, although the Italian carmaker goes forward with its plans, only a few things are actually known about the car. However, it might seem like the Fiat - Chrysler alliance could help the development of the car, as the new 169 could be based on the LX platform which features many Mercedes components and is also being used by Chrysler 300 and Dodge Charger.

Auto Motor und Sport writes that the Alfa 169 will borrow several design elements from other models sold by the Italian iconic brand, including MiTo, Giulietta and 8C Competizione.

As for the engine lineup, rumors are suggesting that Alfa will offer both diesel and gasoline configuration, but the aforementioned source hints that the Italian company might also introduce a twin-turbo V8 unit that would produce more than 400 horsepower. Earlier details suggested that the engine range will output between 170 and 250 horsepower.

It's not yet confirmed, but the initial projects pointed to a rear-wheel drive setup, but the four door coupe might also borrow some other technology from Chrysler or Fiat, so other versions are possible as well.

Of course, Alfa Romeo 169 could be one of the models to reach US stores in the years to come, as Fiat is continuously looking into ways to expand the group's presence in Chrysler's home market. Chrysler on the other hand, comes in Europe through multiple rebadged models, some of which to be sold as Lancia. The first previews will be presented at the upcoming auto shows, including the 2011 NAIAS and the 2011 Geneva Auto Show.
