Three-row luxury utility vehicles are hardly the most exciting vehicles on the market, but if you need to tote five or more passengers around in style and comfort, then they’re hard to beat. Over the last 10 years, the market for three-row luxury SUVs and crossovers has exploded with competitors coming from just about every major automaker.
As many vehicles as there are competing in this growing segment, Acura is now laying claim to being the segment’s sales leader with the Acura MDX. Introduced for the 2001 model year, the Acura MDX was actually one of the first mid-size three-row luxury crossovers on the market, and its right-size has obviously made it a popular choice for consumers at a time when other options included the bulkier, full-size SUVs like the Lexus LX, Cadillac Escalade and Lincoln Navigator.

Since its introduction, Acura has sold almost 693,000 MDXs over crossover’s three generations of the crossover, and Acura says that the MDX has actually been the best-selling three-row luxury SUV since its first full year on the market in 2002. Based on Acura’s calculations, the next closest three-row luxury ute on the list is the Navigator with about 420,000 sales followed by the Escalade Mercedes M-Class and BMW X5 rounding out the top five best sellers in this segment.

One glaring omission from this list is the Buick Enclave, which is one of the MDX’s more direct competitors. Since going on sale in 2007, the Enclave has racked up slightly more than 378,000 sales, which would put it in the third spot on Acura’s list. Other car-based luxury three-row CUVs like the Audi Q7, Lincoln MKT and Infiniti JX35/QX60 are left off the list, too. Acura’s top 10 list is below as well as a handy infographic.
