As of December 2018, the Touareg is much obliged to offer up to 286 PS (282 horsepower) and 600 Nm (443 pound-feet) from the 3.0-liter TDI V6. But with the help of ABT Sportsline, the six-cylinder turbo diesel levels up to 330 PS (325 horsepower) and 650 Nm (479 pound-feet).
This bump comes courtesy of the ABT Engine Control upgrade, which “continuously adjusts a large number of measurement data to ensure optimum power delivery.” That said, the Kempten im Allgäu-based tuner hasn’t tinkered with the software or hardware of the 8HP eight-speed automatic transmission developed by ZF Friedrichshafen.
Complementing the additional performance, ABT Sportsline can equip the third generation of the Touareg with alloy wheels ranging from 20 to 22 inches in diameter. The range-topping option is the ABT Sport GR, available in matte black or gloss black.
These wheels “have not an ounce of unnecessary weight and feature a strong concave rim base,” which is somewhat unwarranted considering that the Touareg isn’t a high-performance vehicle. Customers who want the full ABT treatment can opt for integrated entrance lights which are housed into the door mirrors.
Described as “sovereign in every situation,” chief executive officer Hans-Jürgen Abt added that “the Touareg is special to us. No wonder then that we also enhanced the latest edition of this SUV.” The question is, how much does it cost?
For some reason or another, ABT Sportsline hasn’t uploaded pricing information in the online configurator. What we do know is that the Touareg with the 286-PS engine retails at €61,625, and we’re guessing the upgrades add in the ballpark of €10,000 if the largest wheels are specified.
Starting from 2019, the Touareg will gain the TSI V6 with 340 PS and 450 Nm, TDI V8 with 421 PS and 900 Nm, and a plug-in hybrid that will be initially offered in China. The eco-friendly drivetrain on offer totals 367 PS and an undisclosed amount of torque, at least for the time being.
