Talk about a kid prodigy: a 9-year-old boy from Las Vegas stole his mother’s SUV while she was in the shower and took it on a 10-mile joyride. He would have probably been able to driver farther, but he was intercepted by the police and pulled over.
It happened this weekend and the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police arrived at the scene swiftly after a concerned citizen alerted them of a possible drunk driver weaving in and out of traffic on the highway. As it turns out, the driver wasn’t intoxicated: he was a kid.
Mark Cabigon says he saw the Ford SUV changing lanes without proper care and nearly causing several collisions, and initially thought it was a drunk driver. He called 911 but stayed on the tails of the SUV, trying to alert the other drivers about the need to keep their distance, he tells Fox 5 Vegas.
At some point, he realized the driver was a kid. “I really thought it was a drunk driver,” Cabigon explains. “I don't want an accident. That's why I waved my hands out the door. Trying to stop other drivers, warning them. It just melted my heart when I knew it was a kid.”
He drove behind the Ford until the police cruisers showed up and pulled it over. At that time, the kid had driven 10 miles from his mother’s home – and surprisingly, he managed to avoid all collisions, including a couple of close ones with the concrete median.
Cabigon tells the media outlet that the 9-year-old boy is autistic and, as the father of an autistic child, he understands how this incident came to happen. According to the publication, the police were also very understanding and released the boy to the mother without issuing a citation.
However, whether the “the boy would be grounded or not” was up to the mother, the Metro Police said after the incident was resolved.
