Talk about an outing to remember: an 8-year-old boy from Germany took his mom’s car for a ride on the highway and only pulled over when he started feeling uncomfortable at having hit speeds of 87 mph.
The incident happened near Soest, where the boy and his mother live. The car was a Volkswagen Golf, which the boy thought he could “borrow” despite his young age and the fact that, well, he’s not allowed to drive it legally for another 10 years. The police only became involved when the mother called them because she didn’t know where her kid was.

As it turns out, the boy had pulled over on his own and was waiting for someone to come after him. Fox News reports that the police units found the Golf parked in a parking lot, with the hazard lights on. The kid had even displayed the reflective warning triangle, so points to him for being responsible at least on this account.

He told cops he’d grown “uncomfortable” when he saw he was driving at 87 mph, so he just stopped the car as a safety measure. As for why he took it in the first place, he said he just “wanted to drive a little bit.” Clearly, he didn’t see anything wrong with that.

His mother told the officers that her son had experience with cars: he’d driven road-legal vehicles on private roads, and was also a big fan of bumper cars and go-carts. In other words, he had enough experience not to cause a crash: police confirm no incidents or injuries occurred during the strange joyride.

As of the time of writing, authorities are yet to say whether charges will be pressed against the young driver or his mother. The legal age for driving in the country is 18.
