Do all cool things happen in the Middle East? Possibly so, as after the Audi RS7 challenged an elevator to a race, we now have another duel between unlikely rivals. It's a case of car versus flying man, as the former F1 driver Martin Brundle races Yves Rossy, otherwise known as the Jetman.
Now, we know that this fantastic PR stunt actually took place in November, but the company only now got around to publishing the video, and a press release still isn't available.
Not that we need one, because no matter what Brundle had to say, his 550 horsepower sports sedan or even the F1 cars that he used to race aren't as cool as strapping four jets on a wing and flying.
Also in November, Jetman and his young protege Vince Reffet flew wing-to-wing with an Airbus A380. While the giant airliner had the capacity to carry 525 people, flying in total comfort still isn't as impressive as doing it without any rudders, flaps or complex avionics.
For those of you who haven't heard before of the equipment he uses, know that Yves straps himself to a semi-rigid airplane-type carbon fiber wings with a span of about 7.9 feet (2.4 meters). Those purple cylinders are jet engines called Jet-Cap P200, modified versions of the biggest ones you can buy for model aircraft. According to the manufacturer's website, one of these bad boys costs $4,300 and delivers 52 pounds of thrust. However, that's just the tip of the iceberg, as the carbon wing is worth about $100,000.
Yves is 56 years old, which is a lot for a guy who jumps out of perfectly good aircraft for a living. The daredevil has a background as a fighter pilot and first started working on the jet wing nearly 20 years ago.
In case you are wondering, he can't land like an aircraft, so there's a parachute somewhere in there. So even if the mighty Jag loses, you still need one of those to get home at the end of the day.
