Porsche is in the process of scrapping the gas-powered variants of its most popular models, including the Macan and the 718 Boxster and Cayman. These will only have electric powertrains, with the Macan Electric already available to order. The Porsche 718 Cayman and Boxster will follow soon, as revealed by the prototypes caught testing on the Nürburgring Nordschleife.
Due to new cybersecurity rules, the sales of the combustion Macan and most Porsche 718 models will cease by July in Europe, South Korea, and Japan. Since battery-powered variants are already in development (or in production, in the case of Macan), Porsche deemed it too costly to update the combustion variants to comply with the new regulations. Only small-series models like the 718 Cayman GT4 RS and 718 Spyder RS will remain in the lineup with combustion engines, thanks to special regulatory treatment.

As we've already seen, Porsche is busy testing the 718 Boxster Electric, although we're yet to see similar efforts for the Cayman. This could be because the cabriolet is always more demanding to optimize. It might not be obvious, but cabriolets are heavier and less rigid because they lack the benefit of a solid roof, which is why they need additional reinforcement around the windshield. This makes the Cayman easier to tune up after finding the best setup for the Boxster.

The Porsche 718 Boxster has not been a stranger to carparazzi, having been snapped countless times before. However, the latest set of pictures marks the ending of the winter testing season and the return to the Nordschleife for the final preparations before production. Eyewitnesses testified that the battery-powered Boxster is as good at racing the Nordschleife as its ICE variants. The only notable difference is the missing sound of a proper flat-six engine. The Boxster compensates this with an instantaneous power buildup and explosive sprints.

The electric roadster probably uses a modified version of the PPE platform of its bigger brother, the Macan Electric. This means it features an 800-volt architecture and at least 400 horsepower in a dual-motor configuration. The most powerful Macan Electric is the Macan Turbo, with 630 horsepower, a power level we look up to for the electric 718 Boxster. With lower weight and an agile stance, the 718 Boxster Electric should be a beast on the race track, and we should have some Nürburgring records soon.

The camouflaged prototype doesn't seem to look any different from the variants our photographers snapped last month in Sweden. We can see the production lights following the design of its bigger brothers, the Taycan and Macan Electric. The black cladding is deceiving, but expect the 718 Boxster to look like an evolution rather than a revolution, with incremental changes over the current generation. It makes sense, as Porsche has not made a name for itself for radical redesigns.
