Back in 2022, we were excited to share with you the rumor that BMW would bring the M5 Touring to the US. It came from a highly reputable source, which made us confident that it would actually happen. Lo and behold, we're now inching closer and closer to the reveal, and Domagoj Dukec, BMW's head of design, confirmed the wagon would reach the US. The same source is now saying that the upcoming M5 G90 will be a lot more powerful than its predecessor but also heavier – a lot heavier!
Typically, automakers are looking for ways to reduce the weight of their high-performance rides. More mass to move around translates into needing a stiffer suspension setup, beefier tires, a powertrain that needs to work overtime, and better brakes. A heavier vehicle is also automatically exposed to accelerated wear and tear. That's why the M5 CS was 154 lb lighter than the M5 Competition.

But new high-performance cars must one-up their predecessors and be greener at the same time if they want to attract buyers. The solution? Electrification. But high-voltage batteries are heavy. Pair one or two motors with the energy storage unit, and the weight can increase considerably.

The upcoming BMW M5 G90 is following in the XM's footsteps by becoming a plug-in hybrid. It will have a total output of 718 hp and up to 750 lb-ft (1,020 Nm) of torque.

The 4.4-liter eight-cylinder S68 engine is expected to pump out 577 hp and 553 lb-ft (750 Nm) of torque, according to a reputable Bimmerpost leaker. One motor feeding onto an 18.6-kWh (usable) battery adds 194 hp and 207 lb-ft (280 Nm) of torque.

The internal combustion engine appears to have been slightly detuned because it puts out 627 hp when installed in the M5 CS (F90 LCI). However, the new M5's plug-in hybrid powertrain will be more capable than XM's 644-hp setup.

The XM Label Red and its 738 hp will remain the most powerful BMW ever made until an M5 G90 CS or Label Red appears.

All these changes come with a major change in weight. The 2025 BMW M5 G90 is expected to tip the scales at 5,368 lb (2,435 kg). That's… A lot, no matter how you look at it.

The previous generation had a curb weight of around 4,300 lb, which varied slightly depending on the optional equipment the customer added. Heralded as the most iconic M5, the E39 generation of the high-performance German vehicle weighed around 4,000 lb.

The upcoming 2025 M5 won't be very athletic any longer. It will be as heavy as a 2023 Bentley Continental GT V8 and only 400 lb lighter than a 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor. Even more interesting, the new M5 will only weigh 150 lb more than the X5 xDrive50e, a plug-in hybrid SUV with a six-cylinder under its hood and a 20.9-kWh (usable) high-voltage battery.

Interestingly enough, the M5 F90 will have the same weight as the renewed Porsche Panamera Turbo E-Hybrid. Some could argue that BMW would have been better off by going straight to an all-electric i5 M that could have become a true rival for the Tesla Model S Plaid or the Lucid Air Sapphire.

The source that gave us the power and weight numbers also claims that the M5 G90 will be 1.4 inches (36 millimeters) longer and 2.7 inches (70 millimeters) wider than the normal 5 Series G60. That's due to a different suspension setup. The upgraded high-performance Bavarian family hauler is expected to come as standard with 285/40 R20 tires in the front and 295/35 R21 rubber bands in the rear.

The M5 G90 is scheduled to enter production this July. A facelift that will introduce the Panoramic Vision head-up display visible across the entire windshield width should come in spring 2027. The M5 Touring will enter production this November. Both will be discontinued in 2031.

All this may sound a bit outrageous, but remember that BMW has rarely disappointed when it comes to fun cars that double as posh commuting appliances. Moreover, we already anticipated that the XM powertrain would trickle down to the next-gen M5.

In conclusion, don't allow yourself to become disappointed before seeing and driving the car. BMW has a reputation for making rides that look weird or divisive on a screen but fantastic in real life. At the same time, we can't pass judgment before seeing the sedan in action. Plug-in hybrids may be heavier than mild hybrids, but automakers wouldn't have chosen this middle-ground if it meant only compromises and no important improvements.

Car shows on TV and his father's Fiat Tempra may have been Florin's early influences, but nowadays he favors different things, like the power of an F-150 Raptor. He'll never be able to ignore the shape of a Ferrari though, especially a yellow one.
