The BMW M5 Touring is finally coming to America, and this time, it is for real. The company’s chief designer says so. Therefore, the wagon is on its way to the US.
America has been waiting for this model for years. BMW Head of Design Domagoj Dukec has finally confirmed the arrival of the sports station wagon (G99) in the US, in the company of the M5 sedan (G90), with the latter being the first to hit the market. The Touring version will arrive soon after. This explains why the M5 Touring was caught testing in California sporting a Californian license plate.

We should not expect surprises in terms of design. It will come with the typical M aggressive styling, a package that brings a different front grille, flared fenders, and a rear spoiler. A flat-bottom steering wheel, the M1 and M2 buttons, as well as the typical M features will be on board. The curved display with the iDrive 9 will be there as well.

Both the M5 Sedan and Touring will carry over the powertrain of the XM. This means they will be plug-in hybrids integrating the new S68 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine and an electric motor, integrated into the ZF 8HP torque-converter automatic transmission, delivering a total of over 700 horsepower.

If the XM is anything to go by, we should then expect 644 horsepower (653 metric horsepower) and 480 pound-feet (650 Newton meters) of torque. The Label version goes as far as 738 horsepower (748 metric horsepower) and 738 pound-feet (997 Newton meters).

A lithium-ion battery pack with a net capacity of 25.7 kWh should make the M5 Sedan and Touring drive on electric power only for around 48 miles (30 kilometers).

The XM label hits a top speed of 175 mph (282 kph) with the M Driver's Package, a top speed that might be carried over by the range-topping M5. However, that would make it slower than the outgoing model.

The M5 Touring
will be on its own in a segment that is melting. Mercedes-Benz has already retired the AMG E 63 T-Modell, while the Audi RS 6 Avant is on its way out. Audi is reportedly working on the RS 5 and RS 7 Avant, but none of them has been confirmed for the American market. The BMW M3 Touring, on the market since 2022, has no chance to be sold in the US.

The 2025 BMW M5 Sedan will go into production in July 2024. First customers should receive their cars sometime in the fall, according to a report from Guide Auto Web. The M5 Touring customers will have to wait a little longer: production is scheduled to start in November 2024. We have yet to see if the i5 Touring will make it to the US.
