Revealed with much pomp in 2022, the Eletre is the very first Lotus to come in the form of a sport utility vehicle. It's also the first Lotus to be manufactured in China. Hailing from Wuhan, the Eletre will reach customers in the United States of America in the fourth quarter of 2024 for the 2025 model year.
Pompously advertised as the world's first electric hyper-SUV, the Sino-British crossover is available in the People's Republic of China and in the United Kingdom in three district flavors: Eletre, Eletre S, and Eletre R. Customers in the US are presented with only two versions: the Eletre and Eletre R.

Prices kick off at 107,000 and 145,000 dollars, retrospectively. Lotus also confirmed the starting prices for Canada, those being 126,800 and 178,500 maple bucks. The aesthetically challenged sport utility vehicle rocks two permanent magnet electric motors. Eletre R further sweetens the deal with a two-speed gearbox for the rearmost drive unit, a setup that we've already seen at Audi and Porsche.

What is the role of said transmission, which comes from Chinese automaker Geely? First gear improves acceleration from a standstill, while second gear enables higher speeds and makes the Eletre R that little bit more efficient at high speeds. North America gets a total of seven exterior colors, beginning with Solar Yellow, Kaimu Grey, and Blossom Grey. The remainder comprises Akoya White, Red, Stellar Black, and Galloway Green.

Both Eletre and Eletre R come with a 111.9-kWh battery. The 800-volt pack enables a WLTP combined range of 304 to 354 miles for the Eletre (489 to 570 kilometers) and 254 to 280 miles (409 to 451 kilometers) for the sportier version. But as you're well aware, WLTP is far more optimistic than the EPA's way of estimating driving range.

Gifted with electromechanical rack-and-pinion steering, multi-link suspension fore and aft with dual-chamber air springs, and continuous damping control, the 2025 Lotus Eletre charges from 10 to 80 percent at 350 kW in 20 minutes. From a 22-kW wall box charger, the estimate is 5.8 hours from zero to 100 percent. What about the fun stuff, though?

Although disappointing from the standpoint of aural pleasure, the Eletre more than makes up for that with power and near-instant peak torque. Eletre develops 603 horsepower and 524 pound-feet (710 Nm), whereas Eletre R is listed by the Geely-controlled British automaker with 905 horsepower and 727 pound-feet (985 Nm). Before going any further, it should be noted that the electric vehicle division tasked with producing electric vehicles in China is dubbed Lotus Technology. Said company went public on February 2024 under the ticker symbol LOT.

From a high point of $14.25 per share on February 26, Lotus Technology fell to $6.25 on April 16. Keep this in mind if you intend to place an order for the Eletre, which offers up to 54.1 cubic feet (1,532 liters) of luggage capacity behind the front seats. The front luggage compartment adds 1.6 cubic feet (46 liters) for a grand total of 55.7 cubic feet (1,578 liters).

Capable of hitting 100 kilometers per hour (62 miles per hour) in 2.95 seconds, the Eletre R tops 165 miles per hour (265 kilometers per hour). Its lesser sibling makes do with 4.5 seconds and 160 miles per hour (258 kilometers per hour), respectively. Due to its overall length and wheelbase, the Eletre does not rival the Porsche Macan or BMW iX, but the likes of the Tesla Model X and Lucid Gravity.
