BMW's M Division may be keeping the M3 Touring away from our market, but at least its larger sibling, the upcoming M5 Touring, will make its way to our shores. The announcement is official, and the executive superwagon will launch alongside the sedan in the 2025 model year.
The 2025 BMW M5 Touring is still in the testing phase. The German car manufacturer is subjecting prototypes to trials in different scenarios worldwide, including the United States. And while the wraps have yet to come off, we know what to expect in the design department, for the most part, as it will be a sportier and much faster take on the regular 5 Series Touring.

Fans should look for larger front and rear bumpers with more aggressive designs, muscular wheel arches, a sporty diffuser at the rear, a roof-mounted spoiler, and the usual M logos decorating various exterior components. BMW will also give it exclusive wheels, and to stand out from the standard five-door 5er crowd, the M5 Touring will have a few bespoke paint finishes.

The interior will also undergo a sporty makeover. The model will feature front sports seats with integrated headrests and extra side bolstering, a dedicated M steering wheel with a flat-bottom design, M logos, exclusive upholstery and trim, and a few tweaks to the dual screens. Speaking of the latter, it will likely pack a 14.9-inch infotainment and a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster.

Power-wise, the next-gen M5 Touring (and sedan) remains surrounded by mystery. Yet, its twin-turbocharged V8 with electric assistance is understood to be similar to the one on the XL Label. This likely means the internal combustion lump will have a 4.4-liter displacement, and the electric motor will be housed in the eight-speed gearbox.

In this form, the sporty crossover enjoys 738 horsepower (750 ps/550 kW) and 738 pound-feet (1,000 Nm) of torque. Most outlets agree that the upcoming M5 will have almost identical output and thrust, yet until BMW steps forward to announce the magic numbers, we will take it with a grain of salt, as everything is possible at this point. The car's EV range is said to be over 43 miles (70 km).

How will it compare with one of its biggest rivals in the segment, the Audi RS 6 Avant? Well, the four-ring brand's model packs a 4.0L bi-turbo V8 with 621 hp (630 ps/463 kW) and 627 lb-ft (850 Nm) of torque. It takes 3.3s to reach 60 mph (97 kph) and tops out at 155 miles an hour (250 kph). As a result, we think the next M5 will be faster, and there is a good chance it may cost a bit more. The 2024 RS 6 Avant Performance starts at $125,800.
