It's not only the regular eighth-gen Volkswagen Golf that's going under the knife, but the plug-in hybrid hot hatch derivative too. Spied testing in the open recently, the electrified model will live on for the mid-cycle refresh of the brand's compact hatchback, and there was no reason to believe otherwise.
Exterior revisions are modest, and they comprise new headlamps with different graphics and redesigned lower parts. The bumper is also new, and for now, the model doesn't have the flashy LED lights towards the sides. Decorated by the GTE logo, the minimalist grille appears to be identical.

Things are even more discreet out back, where the new taillights are the only visible change. The tailgate still hosts the corporate logo in the middle and the GTE badge below, and we think the bumper and diffuser combo will be replaced, but they're currently the same. We expect Volkswagen to play around with the wheels and maybe expand the color palette before calling it a day.

Like the normal models, the facelifted Golf GTE will get a larger infotainment display on the inside. Positioned above the central air vents, this piece is partially visible in the latest batch of scoops. The digital instrument cluster, steering wheel, center console with different gear selector, and a few other things will also be new, and the car might get fresh upholstery and trim. Elsewhere, it will feature the same tech, comfort, and safety gizmos, perhaps with minimalist updates.

Under the hood, the current Golf GTE uses a turbocharged 1.4-liter gasoline engine making 148 hp (150 ps/110 kW). It is aided by a 112 hp (114 ps/84 kW) electric motor and has 242 hp (245 ps/180 kW) and 295 lb-ft (400 Nm) of torque combined. The six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission is the sole choice here. From 0-62 mph (0-100 kph), the electrified hot hatch needs 6.7 seconds. The top speed is capped at 140 mph or 225 kph.

There is no reason to believe that it won't soldier on with the same powertrain and might retain the output and torque. If it doesn't, then look for a small boost leading to one- or two-tenths of a second quicker sprint time to sixty-two. One thing that could be replaced is the 13 kWh battery, which is 50% bigger than the one of the old Golf GTE. It gives the car an all-quiet autonomy of 37 miles (60 km) at up to 81 mph (130 kph) and takes three hours and 40 minutes to recharge at 3.6 kW.

The unveiling of the facelifted Golf Mk8 was pushed back to next year, and the GTE should join it shortly after the grand unveiling, alongside the front-wheel drive GTI and all-wheel drive R. This is likely the final iteration of the ICE-powered Golf, as its successor is said to go all-electric and add the ID prefix.
