British bike maker Triumph is one of the quiet ones, a company that doesn't come out with new models as often as some of its competitors do. That's why when Triumph does bring to the market new models, they are bound to make a fuss.
This week the company announced the arrival of not one, but two brand-new machines that will be joining the range. They're not extremely powerful, visually impressive, or in any way revolutionary, but they are quintessentially Triumph and, most importantly, meant for "riders of all ages and experience levels."
The two new models are called Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, and both have been designed from the ground up to be new. They each come with a new frame and bolt-on rear subframe, a cast aluminum swingarm, and a brand new engine for a heart.
Like most other Triumphs out there, the two new machines sport a sculpted fuel tank with knee indents up on the frame, black powder-coated engine casings, gold anodized forks, and engine profiles that have a definitive classic look to them.
Despite being shaped in such an old-school fashion, the Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X do adopt some modern styling cues, including concealed liquid cooling for the engine and a flowing exhaust with a hidden primary silencer.
Speaking of the powerplant, Triumph decided to fit these two-wheelers with the same one, a new fuel-injected and liquid-cooled single-cylinder engine just 398cc in displacement. The unit is part of the TR Series, and it's tied to a six-speed transmission.
As said, the engine is not immensely powerful, but at 40 hp and 37.5 Nm of torque it more than adequately gets the job done.
Both bikes are also equipped with a traction control system and Bosch dual-channel ABS for safe riding. Riders are kept in the loop with the bikes' performance and state through a large analog speedometer and integrated LCD screen, which can be commanded with the help of a handlebar-mounted scroll button.
These being modern motorcycles, they are also equipped with USB-C charging and LED lights all around. A steering lock and an anti-theft immobilizer are offered as standard.
Despite being mostly similar, the two new Triumph machines do have things to call their own. You can have a look at what sets them apart in the lines below.
2024 Triumph Speed 400

The 2024 Triumph Speed 400 is part of the roadster family of British-made bikes, and will be part of the family that presently comprises the Speed Twin 900 and 1200. It weighs 170 kg (375 pounds), and moves on 17-inch wheels.
The bike comes off the factory assembly lines packing a 43 mm big-piston upside-down front forks and mono-shock rear suspension. The rider is seated 790 mm off the ground.
The Speed 400 will be available in two-tone paint schemes with a prominent Triumph tank graphic. The colors available for this one are Carnival Red, Caspian Blue and Phantom Black.
2024 Triumph Scrambler 400 X

Inspired by the Scrambler 900 and 1200 and with a touch of influence taken from the first Triumph Scrambler of the 1950s, the 400 X is a bit more rugged. You can instantly tell that thanks to the presence of protection hardware for the headlight, radiator and sump, the handguards, or the longer front mudguard.
The bike is also longer than its sibling and comes with more suspension travel. It moves over ground thanks to larger, 19-inch wheels, and is more adept at riding over surfaces that are not necessarily asphalt.
As a result of all the differences, it is also heavier. This bike tips the scales at 179 kg (395 pounds), and the seat is located higher from the ground than on the Speed 400, at 835 mm.
The color choice for the Scrambler 400 X is more diverse too, giving riders a choice between three color combinations: Matt Khaki Green and Fusion White, Carnival Red and Phantom Black, and Phantom Black and Silver Ice. No matter the choice, the fuel tank features a Scrambler stripe and triangle badge.
Triumph says both these models will be available in India, one of its largest markets, as soon as next month. The rest of the world, though, will have to wait a while longer, as they will not become available sooner than 2024.
We're not told anything relevant about pricing, not even for the bikes to be sold in India, but we are promised both two-wheelers "will be competitively priced."
No matter how competitive the starting price is, do keep in mind that most of the time some additions will likely have to be made to truly personalize the ride, and that always drives pricing up. For the 2024 Speed 400 and Scrambler 400 X, Triumph already has some 25 genuine accessories on the table.
