Tesla launched the refreshed Model 3 in most markets outside North America, and Australia was the last to get it. During the launch event in Sidney, Tesla's vehicle program manager, Daniel Ho, talked about the Model 3 Performance, which is yet to be announced.
Tesla started deliveries of the refreshed Model 3 in many markets outside North America, including Europe and China. The Australians were among the last to get the Model 3 Highland, but Tesla wanted to compensate. Unlike other markets, where Tesla quietly started sales of the refreshed Model 3, Australia actually got a launch event. Daniel Ho, Tesla's director for Vehicle Programs and New Product Introduction (NPI), discussed Highland's many improvements during that event.

So far, Tesla has only launched the Model 3 RWD and the Model 3 Long Range AWD, with no Performance model in sight. Rumors about the most powerful Model 3 variant have been floating around for quite some time, not least in European certification documents. Thanks to the Australian launch, we now have an official confirmation that the Model 3 Performance will arrive sooner than expected.

During the Model 3 Highland launch in Sidney, Daniel Ho teased the Model 3 Performance. Tesla's executive, who has been responsible for the Model 3 program since the very beginning, confirmed that the sportiest variant of Tesla's electric sedan will arrive in the first half of 2024. According to Australian media outlets, Daniel Ho hinted at a more powerful Model 3 Performance.

Tesla engineer said the original M3P was rushed to the market in 2017, forcing Tesla to "leave a few things on the table." With the release of the 2024 Model 3 Performance, Tesla will address this to benefit driving enthusiasts across the globe. Of course, Daniel Ho didn't offer more details except to confirm that the upcoming sports version of the Model 3 will not be named Plaid or Ludicrous, as rumored before, but Performance, as it always was.

Based on certification documents in Europe, the refreshed Model 3 Performance is identified by the letter "T" in the eighth position of the VIN, previously reserved for the Plaid variants of the Model S and Model X. Despite speculations, this doesn't mean the M3P will have a tri-motor configuration. Instead, it will come with a new electric motor on the rear axle, with the code 5D1 instead of 3D7. People speculate that this will have a carbon sleeve rotor for increased performance.

The Performance variant is expected to land alongside the US-made Model 3. As revealed by recent camouflaged prototypes, Tesla is already testing the sporty electric sedan in the US. Based on the covered parts, the Model 3 Performance will undoubtedly feature a unique front bumper and rear diffuser. Leaked pictures also revealed that the sportscar will feature bucket seats and a new adaptive suspension setup with adjustable dampers.
