The Mlada Boleslav-based Czech automaker has a sensible alternative (or two) to Volkswagen's recent Golf refresh - its very own Scala hatchback and Kamiq CUV built on the Volkswagen Group MQB A0 platform.
This version of the modular architecture is connected with the Skoda Fabia or Kushaq, VW T-Cross and Polo (plus the lesser-known Virtus), as well as the Seat Ibiza and Arona. Naturally, it's always a big deal when one model in the family gets some updates as the others are set to follow. Well, Skoda is refreshing both the Scala hatchback and its Kamiq sibling.
The Skoda Scala compact hatchback was introduced on the market in 2019 to slot between the Fabia and Octavia models as the successor to the Skoda Rapid Spaceback. Meanwhile, the Kamiq subcompact crossover SUV doesn't have a predecessor as it's part of the Czech company's expansion of the CUV offerings – also, since 2019, it's the smallest representative of the crossover range sitting below the Karoq, all-electric Enyaq, and Kodiaq models.
Now, both the Skoda Scala and Kamiq get a "comprehensive" set of upgrades to make them a more "dynamic duo." As per Volkswagen AG tradition, don't expect to easily make out the styling differences between the pre-facelift and new models, so here are the changes starting with the introduction of the LED Matrix headlights. The latter are also "sharply drawn," and together with redesigned front and rear aprons, they "add even more sporting flair to the Scala and contribute to increased SUV presence on the Kamiq."
Additionally, the refreshed interior features Design Selections and new materials that are more sustainable than before. Plus, there's an optional electric tailgate with a "virtual pedal," new Simply Clever features, and the cockpit of the two models is now completely digital thanks to a standard 8-inch Digital Display and an 8.25‑inch infotainment system. No less than four USB-C ports with up to 45W and a Phone Box with 15W wireless charging are available, along with a new trim structure.
There are just three grades now, SE, SE L, and Monte Carlo, and customers will also select from three distinct interior Design Selections (Loft, Lodge, Monte Carlo). At the same time, recycled fabrics, hemp, and kenaf are now used for the upholstery and door panels. Under the hood, the Scala and Kamiq feature more powerful and efficient 1.0-liter and 1.5L TSI engines from the evo2 generation of EA211 gasoline powertrains with a power range from 95 ps to 150 ps (94 to 148 hp).
For example, the more powerful 1.0 TSI has six more horsepower for a total of 116 ps (114 hp), while the latest evolution of the 1.5 TSI features a new catalytic converter, as well as upgraded software for the ACT+ active cylinder deactivation system, letting it run more efficiently and smoothly on just two cylinders.
