Codenamed C190 for the coupe and R190 for the roadster, the GT prepares for a ground-up refresh exclusively as a coupe. Coming to a dealer near you for the 2024 model year, the second gen is a very different animal from the progenitor, beginning with the aluminum spaceframe chassis introduced by the R232-generation Sport Leicht.
Scheduled to premiere on August 19, the 2024 model has been confirmed with eight cylinders to its name. Rather than the M178 engine of the first generation, this fellow boasts the M177 of the SL. The main difference between them is the oiling system: dry sump for the M178 and wet sump for the M177. Assembled by hand, the M177 produces up to 697 horsepower (707 ps) and 663 pound-feet (900 Nm) of torque in the Aston Martin DBX707.

When it comes to Mercedes-branded applications, the M177 in the SL 63 produces a respectable 577 horsepower (585 ps) and 590 pound-feet (800 Nm) at full chatter. That's enough for the 63 series to reach 60 miles per hour (97 kilometers per hour) in roughly 3.5 seconds. Top speed? Make that 196 mph (315 kph), thank you!

Of course, Merc won't stop here. Both the SL and second-generation GT have been spied testing a plug-in hybrid V8 powertrain, which may be marketed as the E Performance. In the GT 4-Door Coupe, which actually has five doors (the fifth being the rear hatch), this plug-in setup is rated at 831 ponies (843 ps) and a ludicrous 1,033 pound-feet (1,400 Nm) of tire-destroying torque.

The 2024 Mercedes-AMG GT teaser videos published by the German automaker on social media further confirm 4MATIC+, the all-wheel-drive system exclusive to AMG vehicles. In the 213-series E 63, the 4MATIC+ system features a rear-drive mode for more fun in the twisties. Some like to call it drift mode, but on the other hand, drift mode does sound rather daft in a performance-oriented car that's built around a rear-drive architecture.

Pictured in a lovely shade of silver, the GT in the teaser videos below further sports black exterior badges, black window trim, black wheels, and a black fixed rear wing. The GT 63 4MATIC+ further boasts a set of massive carbon-ceramic brakes with burnt orange brake calipers.

Although not obvious from the teaser videos, the second-generation GT features an automatic transmission with a wet start-off clutch instead of the predecessor's dual-clutch gearbox. The Getrag-supplied DCT of the first generation isn't compatible with all-wheel drive, and Mercedes never used the Getrag 7DCL750 in combination with the M177 engine.

Similar to the SL, the GT may also receive a detuned V8 under the 55 moniker. The SL 55, for reference, makes 469 horsepower (476 ps) and 516 pound-feet (700 Nm). There's even a chance for the M139 four-cylinder turbo of the SL 43 roadster to carry over to the GT 43 coupe, but only time will tell if that's actually going to happen.
