Marking the launch of the MANUFAKTUR customization program in the US market, the SL 63 MANUFAKTUR Big Sur is exclusive to the United States. Coming to a dealer near you for the 2024 model year, this exquisite-looking roadster dons unique paint and a unique combination of design elements.
First things first, how many will be made? Mercedes-AMG didn't say but did mention limited numbers. Pricing is a mystery as well, although it's easy to guesstimate $200k for this fellow. Sans destination charge and optional extras, the SL 63 is currently listed by the online configurator at an eye-watering $183k.

The striking exterior paint is called MANUFAKTUR Orange Flame Metallic. From the 2023 model year's color palette, the closest thing to it is Sun Yellow, the launch color for this generation of the Sport Leicht.

Painted on the MANUFAKTUR line at the Bremen factory in Germany, the SL 63 MANUFAKTUR Big Sur was baptized as such after the namesake region on California's coastline. Certain body panels, including the bumpers, are sprayed by hand. The eye-catching paint is complemented by the AMG Exterior Chrome Package, black calipers and wheels, and a black soft top. Special touches further include the AMG emblem above the Panamericana radiator grille, a first for the R232 generation.

The cool stuff continues with hand-stitched leather from MANUFAKTUR, namely Mystic Red and Black Nappa upholstery. Orange stitching is also featured, along with MANUFAKTUR Orange Flame Metallic-painted center console trim. The center console's door is beautified with the MANUFAKTUR script in glossy chrome, which is a bit baffling because chrome isn't a luxurious finish.

Gifted with diamond quilting perforations, the multicontour massaging seats are joined by floor mats with AMG logos, Mystic Red Nappa leather piping, and orange stitching. As expected, the list of standard features includes a premium audio system. CONTROL Suspension, AMG Light Display, the Performance Trim Line, Front Axle Lift System, AMG Active Ride, the AMG DYNAMIC PLUS Package, and Driver Assistance Package have to be highlighted as well.

Under the hood, it's business as usual for the SL 63. The name of the game is M177, which is Mercedes vernacular for the 4.0L twin-turbo V8 we all know and love. Not to be confused with the dry-sump M178 of the GT, the wet-sump M177 produces 577 horsepower in this application. In regard to peak torque, make that 590 pound-feet (800 Nm) at 2,500 revolutions per minute.

Instead of a torque-converter automatic, the SL 63 uses a nine-speed transmission with a wet start-off clutch. Not only does it reduce weight (compared to a torque converter), but lower inertia further means improved throttle response. 60 miles per hour (that'd be 97 kilometers per hour) is dealt with in 3.5 clicks, onto a top speed of 196 miles per hour (315 kilometers per hour).

In addition to the SL 63 MANUFAKTUR Big Sur, the 2024 model year Mercedes-AMG SL promises more customization options due to the introduction of the MANUFAKTUR program in the United States. The options in question include three new paint colors and two leather upholsteries. Nappa, of course!
