In 2024, Mercedes-AMG refreshed the W464 G63 and improved it in critical areas to improve the well-known SUV’s fuel efficiency and add more grunt to the iconic vehicle.

While Mercedes-Benz was responsible for providing the market with a capable SUV powered by a choice of two inline-six turbocharged engines, Mercedes-AMG remained true to its V8 powerplant. However, there were other differences between these two siblings, who were hand-built in Austria at the factory in Graz. The new model came with additional upgrades, which were meant to lower emissions, lower fuel consumption, and help its customers with extra features. However, these upgrades aside, the G-Class still remained true to its roots in terms of rugged appearance, excellent off-road performance, and even a track mode for the G63.

At the front, the 2024 Mercedes-AMG G63 surprised its customers with a redesigned front fascia. While it wasn’t a radical change, neither of its predecessors were. Its radiator grille featured vertical slats, not four horizontal ones. Furthermore, the lower side of the bumper was fitted with redesigned side scoops, which had three small vertical slats inside them. On the other hand, the turn signal lamps were still bolted on top of the front fenders.

From its profile, the 2024 G63 featured new door handles. While these mainly looked like those installed in the 2018 model year, they were fitted with a keyless unlock system. Furthermore, the A-pillars boasted new trims, which reduced wind noise and improved fuel efficiency. However, the main elements that made the G-Class famous, such as the door grab handles, the exposed hinges, and the optional side steps, remained. Under these, in front of the rear wheels, Mercedes-AMG installed new round exhausts, two on each side of the vehicle. The car manufacturer provided the vehicle with 20-inch alloy wheels as standard, while a 22-inch set was on the options list. In the back, the automaker installed the spare wheel on the rear door. To help drivers when reversing, a backup camera was installed above the license plate, and next to it was a washer nozzle to clean it.

Inside, the luxurious cabin boasted a high level of luxury. But still, the automaker didn’t want customers to forget they were in a G-Class. As a result, Mercedes-AMG installed the three buttons that could lock the front, middle, and rear differentials on the center stack between the round vents of the HVAC system. Fronting the driver was a color display that was complemented by a touchscreen placed atop the center stack. Behind the three-spoke steering wheel, the automaker added the stalk for the automatic transmission, while on the rest, the controls for the turn signals, wipers, and other car functions. Both front seats had inflatable areas that helped their occupants stay in their place during high-speed cornering maneuvers.

Under the hood, the automaker continued its policy of one technician for one engine. A belt-driven starter generator helped the four-liter twin-turbocharged powerplant develop the massive 585 PS (577 hp) and a huge torque sent in all corners via a nine-speed automatic transmission.
