Volvo is one of the most vocal automakers when it comes to its electrification strategy, and the company is striving to keep up its promise. On this occasion, it’s doing so on a local level (for the UK market), focusing specifically on the popular XC60 crossover SUV.
A former World Car of the Year in 2018, Volvo’s midsize XC60 crossover has always been one of the most compelling offers in the premium SUV segment. As such, it’s not only the company’s top selling sport-utility, but also Volvo’s best-selling vehicle overall, with November figures still putting it ahead of its XC40 and XC90 siblings.

To give you a clear image of how important this trio of crossovers has become for Volvo, the company notes that out of its total worldwide delivery count of 66,579 vehicles, 73.4% of sales were accounted by SUVs last month. Furthermore, Recharge models (fully electric and PHEVs) accounted for 16.4% of total sales after the first eleven months of the year.

Naturally, electrification is becoming an even more important playing field going forward. Take the XC60 model range in the UK, for example, where the models are now solely available with hybrid power – from mild-hybrid gasoline and diesel options to a trio of plug-in hybrid options.

Pricing for the XC60 kicks off at £40,460 (around $53,975 at the current exchange levels), with the automaker pushing forward the front-wheel-drive B4 diesel and B5 gasoline mild hybrid as the base options. These two combine a 2.0-liter engine with a 48V battery system, an integrated starter generator, and a kinetic energy recovery system (KERS).

Power levels start from 197 horsepower for the B4 and 250 hp for the B5, and customers can also upgrade to B5 diesel and B6 gasoline options, receiving exclusive access to an AWD setup and 235 or 300 horsepower, respectively.

There is also a trio of plug-in hybrid versions, which combine a supercharged and turbocharged 2.0-liter four-pot with an electric motor to form an e-AWD powertrain. The 11.6 kWh battery pack is common across all three variants, enabling a fully electric range of up to 32 miles (51 km).

In turn, there are three power stages, with the entry-level Recharge T6 kicking off the proceeds from 340 horsepower for £50,695 ($67,642), when selecting the Inscription Expression trim level. Go for the Recharge Plug-in Hybrid T8, and Volvo will upgrade the credentials to 390 or 405 horsepower, the latter available as a Polestar Engineered sporty version.
