At the Chicago Auto Show in the early days of February 2020, at a time when public car launches were still a thing, Volkswagen revealed the facelift for the American-made Atlas. Coming to the world with a number of changes, the new interpretation aims to continue the success story of its predecessor.
As Volkswagen is getting ready to launch the SUV on the market, the company’s American Senior Vice President for Product Marketing & Strategy Hein Schaefer presented the new Atlas the best he could, revealing all that’s new in the model in a walkaround video available at the bottom of this page.
On the outside, the SUV now shows the same three-bar grille extending into the front light signature that is featured on the Cross Sport five seater variant. Inside, a new steering wheel design and new optional contrast-stitching on the leather seating surfaces and door trim are the main changes.
The most exciting news for future Atlas owners is the availability of the Basecamp accessory line, a series of add-ons that have been previewed on the Atlas Basecamp concept shown at the 2019 New York International Auto Show.
To be sold either separately or as a package, Basecamp is only offered for the Atlas models equipped with a trailer hitch or R-Line-compatible trims, and adds things like 17-inch wheels, extensive cladding all around, two-tone satin silver and textured anthracite front bumper guard, fender flares with integrated splash guards, and satin silver side door rocker panels and rear valance.
Under the hood of the Atlas there are two engines, a V6 that develops 276 hp, and a four-cylinder that cranks out 235 hp, both paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission.
The new Atlas SUV is selling in the U.S. from $31,545. You can watch what the Volkswagen executive has to say about the car in the video below.
