It’s been nearly a week since German carmaker Volkswagen unveiled the ID.3, its first true electric vehicle for the masses. A week of pre-orders that has shown that customers in Europe love electric car, and that making a move in this segment is the right choice.
With the official presentation of the car last week, Volkswagen also opened the pre-booking platform, one that was instantly hit with a surge of registrations that caused headaches for the carmaker’s IT department: 10,000 orders have been placed for the ID.3 in the first hours.

Since then, the enthusiasm somewhat died down, if we are to judge solely by the huge number of orders on the first day. From 10,000 in 24 hours, the cue grew to just 15,000 over the following seven days.

But that’s still huge if we look at it from another perspective. Pre-booking is available only for the ID.3 1st edition, of which only 30,000 will be built. That means in just one week the Germans got potential customers for half of the production target.

The ID.3 will be offered with a variety of battery options. The 1st edition is fitted with a medium-sized battery and comes complete with free charging for a year or a total of 2,000 kWh, voice control, and navigation system.

This version costs just under €40,000, or €10,000 more than the entry-level version that will be offered once production truly starts.

The pre-booking platform is still live for those willing to be among the first in Europe to drive an electric Volkswagen, and only €1,000 is required as a down payment to express interest.

The money is fully refundable, provided the customer cancels the order before the start of the 2019 Frankfurt International Auto Show this fall, when production is scheduled to begin.

Deliveries for the ones ordering now are expected to begin in mid-2020.
