Ever since it decided to get rid of most of the brands it owned and focus on its two main product lines, Ford Motor Company also stated its intention of reinventing both Ford and Lincoln brands in the years ahead.
With Wednesday’s introduction of the new Lincoln Aviator at the Los Angeles Auto Show, that reinvention has officially begun.

The resurrection of the Aviator nameplate some 13 years after it was discontinued comes at a time when SUVs make for the highest volume segment in the U.S. and several other big markets of the world.

Officially, Ford calls its creation a midsize SUV, despite the fact that it looks more like a full-size one - there is no data yet on the dimensions of the car, so for now we'll take Ford's word for it.

The SUV will be offered by Ford in two variants, the Aviator and Aviator Grand Touring. The former is powered by a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 engine that works alone, while the latter will be pairing the same powerhouse to a plug-in system.

On both versions the engine will be paired with a 10-speed SelectShift® automatic transmission. The ICE-powered Aviator is expected to deliver 400 horsepower and 400 lb.-ft. of torque, while the hybrid will be a tad punchier, with 450 horsepower and a 600 lb.-ft. of torque on tap.

Five driving modes will be available on the regular SUV - Normal, Conserve, Excite, Slippery and Deep Conditions – and an extra two, Pure EV and Preserve EV, will be making their way on the Grand Touring.

As said, the Aviator is targeted at the luxury SUV segment, which means it comes with all the needed amenities to fulfill its mission.

The equipment list for the car, which you can find in full in the document attached below, is extensive and includes 30-way adjustability and massage capability for the seats, and a huge number of speakers, 28, as part of the Revel Ultima 3D audio system.

For the first time in a Lincoln car, a phone can be used to unlock the doors. Called Phone As A Key, the tech also means individual preferences for seat, mirror, and steering column positions are automatically configured as soon as the driver enters the car.

Also, the Aviator’s suspension system automatically lowers when the driver is ready to get in.

Ford did not say when the car will become available on the market, nor did it say how much an Aviator will cost.
