A few months after the 286 horsepower version, the new VW Touareg is finally available for order with a lesser 3.0 TDI producing 231 HP.
We've known it was coming all along, but the German website just started listing this version of the big SUV. The rest of the powertrain stays the same, meaning an 8-speed automatic sends power to all four wheels.

The fuel consumption is also unchanged at 6.6 l/100km, as is the 173 grams of CO2 produced every kilometer. However, if you're willing to sacrifice performance, you will be rewarded with some savings, as the 231 HP engine starts from €57,125, exactly €3,500 cheaper.

Besides losing 55 HP, the V6 diesel also drops 100 Nm to just 500 Nm. As a result, the 0 to 100 km/h time changes from 6.1 to 7.5 seconds. However, the Touareg is one of the few VWs we've ever seen being much slower than officially claimed.

De-tuned 3.0 TDI units are nothing new for the VW Group. The last Touareg was produced with a 204 HP version of this V6. The Audi Q7 sister model uses a 218 HP unit, but the Q8 will get a 231 HP one just like the Touareg. By the end of the year, a 3.0 TSI with 340 HP will also join the range, probably followed by the 4-liter TDI that's likely to wear the R badge.

You might need that money to spend on options, considering the ones VW offers are quite expensive. A set of R-branded wheels can set you back €3,050 while a complete R-Line body kit (interior and exterior) set you back €3,300. And you don't want to know what they ask for the adaptive air suspension!

The two previous generations of the Touareg have paved the way for a large range of Volkswagen SUVs. However, the 2019 model has been moved to the new MLB platform, which is shared even with the Bentley Bentayga. It's also 77mm longer than before for much more interior space.
