With winter almost ready to retreat towards its icy domains, it’s time to start preparing for the sunny times ahead. And what better way to feel it’s all roses when you plan for a summer trip than knowing you’ll have an open-top companion at your disposal?
If money is no issue, we have the perfect option already listed by Mecum Auctions for its upcoming 2021 Glendale, Arizona spring event scheduled for March 18th to 20th. It’s something that not only has the Porsche badge up front and comes with 911 heritage, but it’s also possibly the ultimate 991-series model. Yes, it's the Speedster.
Frankly, it’s probably the only version that will stop any discussion about this GT2/GT3 or that Turbo S in its tracks. And rightfully so, since Porsche has used the nameplate very sparingly, with just five versions known throughout its entire history. Of course, one might call it a bit egotistical since it always involves two seats and quite a few compromises.
But, oh boy, every one of them has been and always will be poster material. So, enough with the drooling, and let’s check out this particular 2019 911 Speedster, number 1,370 of exactly 1,948 (get the reference?) produced by the German sports car maker.
All conditions are set for it to stand out in any crowd easily. It’s dressed up in a paint-to-sample non-metallic Signal Yellow (a $12,830 option) and has just 32 miles (51 km) on the odometer. The summer shade is contrasted via the black 20-inch forged alloy wheels and the seriously dressed black interior (with yellow contrast stitching), and the top residing under the CFRP double bubble streamliners lid.
Lurking in the back is the 4.0-liter naturally aspirated boxer that got snatched from the GT3 RS to deliver all 502 of its ponies through a six-speed manual transmission to the mechanical rear differential with asymmetrical locking. We’re telling you all that just in case there’s even a slim chance this unit isn’t going to be confined to a life inside a locked garage vault.
