Mercedes-Benz has prepared a true revolution for the third coming of the CLS, the machine that is credited with the popularisation of the four-door coupe segment.
For one thing, this side of the lineup will be split in two, with the CLS set to be joined by the Mercedes-AMG GT four-door. And while the latter does use a Mercedes-Benz platform as a starting point, the machine is being developed by the engineers in Affalterbach.

Another important difference between the two comes from the body type - despite the slopping rooflines of both machines making it seem like they're close, the CLS will remain faithful to the four-door coupe recipe, while the Mercedes-AMG will pack a liftback design, just like the two-door GT we've already met.

The prototypes for both contraptions have recently been spotted chasing each other on the Nurburgring and, as you'll notice in the video below, the duo makes for one monumental sight.

The two will obviously be separated by the firepower, but when it comes to the details of each vehicle's powertrain, we need to enter rumor land.

Expect the Mercedes-AMG GT Four-Door to remain close to the formula showcased by the stunning concept that previewed it - the concept is motivated by a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 paired with an electric motor, with the total system output sitting at 816 hp. And, given the layout of the vehicle, we can talk about all-wheel-drive torque vectoring.

We could also see Mercedes-AMG introducing a combustion-only incarnation of the vehicle, which should pack around 600 ponies.

As for the 2018 CLS, forum chat mentions that the model could lose its CLS63 badge. Thus, a CLS50 or CLS55 could become the new range-topper, with these badges supposedly mixing six-cylinder power with a mild-hybrid setup and up to 476 hp.

Those of you willing to zoom in on the prototypes of the two machines will be reminded that we recently spied the 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLS and the 2019 Mercedes-AMG Four-Door Coupe in detail.
