Even though some voices still talk about the new CLS becoming a CLE, we're not so sure that the model will change its name.
That said, a left-hand drive prototype was recently caught by our spy photographers wearing minimal camouflage, so finding the truth about its name is not that far away in time. Recent rumors suggest that a 2017 Los Angeles Auto Show official reveal is most likely in the works.

Based on the MRA (Modular Rear-wheel-drive Architecture) platform, just like its E-Class brother, the third generation of the CLS will also sport a center console that is almost an exact replica of the one found in the E-Class Coupe C238. In turn, that center console is a mix of what is used in the E-Class W213 and the Concept S-Class Coupe.

Somewhat strange, this almost naked Mercedes-Benz prototype is an RHD model, destined for markets like the UK, Japan or Australia, and we're not so sure why it was spied on German roads, wearing German plates. The interior image is from a different prototype, obviously.

Despite what was clearly an AMG model having been spotted a few weeks ago, rumors are suggesting that the CLS 63 will not get a replacement. Instead, a CLS 50 or 55 will take its place, powered by a mild-hybrid, turbocharged inline-six with 476 PS on tap.

Whether that model will become the top of the range model or will simply be a step to the V8-powered CLS 63 remains to be seen. Either way, with the Mercedes-AMG GT four-door also being on the way, the V8-powered CLS might indeed become extinct, just like the CLS Shooting Brake, which apparently will not get a successor.

We will definitely learn more about the third generation of the original premium four-door coupe once it gets closer to its official reveal in November. In any case, these latest spy photos show a pretty elegant profile and some nifty looking deisgn features.
