The first new AMG version of the Mercedes-Benz G-Class in several decades is finally ready to meet its American customers, nearly ten months after it was introduced at the Geneva Motor Show.
Mercedes announced on Monday the pricing for the model on the U.S. market. Locally, the car will start at $147,500, excluding $995 destination and delivery. That’s $23,000 above the price of the next best thing currently on the market, the Mercedes-Benz G 550.

The AMG G 63 is powered by the same AMG 4.0-liter V8 bi-turbo as in Europe, developing 585 hp and a maximum torque of 850 Nm. In American speak, however, the model sounds a tad less punchy, developing 577 horsepower (Imperial measurement). It will be mated to the same AMG Speedshift TCT 9G transmission.

With these specs, Mercedes-Benz says the car is capable of reaching 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, which the same time it takes the European version to reach 62 mph.

The top speed of the G 63 is limited to 220 kph (136 mph), but one can go around that by opting for the AMG Driver‘s package, which adds 20 kph on top of that and makes the car the fastest ever factory-built G-Class based AMG.

The G 63 is an off-roader so it will come with five on-road and three off-road driving modes, a first for the entire Mercedes-AMG G-Class range.

The car is also roomier than ever before, offering more space for its passengers. The model has increased in size to be 101 millimeters longer, 121 millimeters wider and 40 millimeters taller than the previous model.

The G 63 comes equipped with a completely new interior featuring, among other things, the COMAND Navigation, 12.3 inch central display, and 64-color ambient lighting.

For the U.S. the Mercedes-AMG G 63 will begin deliveries in early 2019. The G 63 will offer an Edition 1 exclusive model as well, but it’s unclear yet if this will be available for the U.S. market.
