The U.S. configurator for the 2019 Ranger is online, and from it, we understand that the cheapest pickup truck in the family starts at $25,395 including shipping. At the other end of the spectrum, a fully-loaded Ranger costs more than $40,000.
First of all, how does the Blue Oval stack up against Toyota and General Motors? The Ranger is about the same price as the Tacoma ($25,400), but more expensive than the Colorado and Canyon ($20,995 and $22,095). The thing is, Ford offers more standard equipment than Chevrolet and GMC do for their mid-size pickup trucks.

For the 2019 model year, two body styles (SuperCab and SuperCrew) and three trim levels (XL, XLT, and Lariat) are available. Each and every single one features rear-wheel drive from the get-go and four-wheel drive as an option. The SuperCab comes with a six-foot box and the SuperCrew levels down to five feet because of the larger cabin.

In terms of oily bits, the 2.3-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder turbo engine is teamed up with the 10-speed automatic transmission also offered in the F-150 and Mustang. Add $1,295 to any 4WD configuration, and you’ll be treated to the FX4 package that includes four drive modes, trail control, automatic emergency braking, and so forth.

Torture-tested in the same fashion as the F-150, the Ranger comes with Dana-developed axles and mostly steel for the body shell. Wi-Fi hotspot with 4G Internet connectivity are standard, to which the Dearborn-based automaker adds FordPass Connect and pre-collision assist.

The Ranger Drive Tour kicks off in November, offering potential customers the chance of driving the workhorse before putting down a deposit on their own. As for when the first examples of the breed will arrive at U.S. dealerships, Ford says that will happen early next year.

Over in Europe, the Ranger is exclusively available with turbo diesel engine options. The Ranger Raptor, packing the 2.0-liter EcoBlue bi-turbo diesel, will arrive early next year in this part of the world. With a bit of luck and based on spy photographs of near-production test mules, the off-road model will go on sale in the U.S. sometime in 2019.
