While the Nissan Navara is in its third generation (D23) since 2014, the U.S.-spec Frontier soldiers into the 2018 model year with underpinnings sourced from the second-generation Navara (D40). In other words, the cheapest mid-size pickup truck available in the United States is based on a design from 2004.
Compared to the 2017 Frontier ($18,390 excluding the $940 destination charge), the 2018 Frontier is more expensive by $600. The $18,990 starting price applies to the S trim level in King Cab configuration, with 4x2, the four-cylinder engine, and a five-speed manual transmission. At the other end of the scale, the Frontier SL Crew Cab 4x4 SWB V6 5AT variant retails at $36,150.

Some of the upgrades applied to the 2018 model year include enhanced standard equipment. By that, Nissan refers to RearView Monitor, air conditioning, cruise control, Bluetooth connectivity for your mobile phone, 5.0-inch infotainment system, and Siri Eyes Free. In addition to the superior specification, the Frontier gains a special model that’s called Midnight Edition.

Available in Crew Cab SV 4x2 5AT and Crew Cab SV 4x4 5AT configurations, the Midnight Edition is a visual package at heart. Bundling special floor mats, black badging, door handles, mirror caps, step rails, and 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, the Frontier Midnight Edition is available in three exterior colors: Magnetic Black (pictured), Gun Metallic, as well as Glacier White.

As ever, there are two engines to choose. The entry-level unit is a 2.5-liter inline-4 with 152 horsepower, and it’s exclusive to the King Cab. As for the 4.0-liter DOHC V6, the naturally aspirated mill is good for 261 horsepower and 281 pound-feet of torque. In total, Nissan offers five grades for the Frontier. These are the S, SV, PRO-4X, Desert Runner, and range-topping SL.

While it may boast incredible value for money, the 2018 Nissan Frontier is the least safe pickup truck in the segment in the event of a crash. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety rated the Frontier “poor” for lower leg protection and structural rigidity, thus translating to an overall rating of “marginal.”
