Introduced as the D40 Navara in 2004, what the U.S. calls the Nissan Frontier is a 12-year-old design. Not only that, but the D23 Navara is in production since 2014. In other words, the United States is missing out on Nissan’s newest mid-size truck.
Be that as it may, the Nissan Frontier is the cheapest model in its segment. For the 2017 model year, the Frontier in S King Cab 4x2 i4 5MT configuration starts from $18,390 excluding the $940 destination and handling. The Honda Ridgeline, by comparison, is $29,475 in the most no-frills specification. As for other trucks in the mid-size segment, the Tacoma kicks off from $24,120, while the Colorado holds a starting MSRP of $20,055.

For its 12th year in the Nissan lineup, the Frontier prides itself on minor enhancements. These come in the form of a body-color rear bumper for the S grade, as well as an optional package dubbed S Work Truck Package. The latter includes goodies such as rubber floor mats, splash guards, bed rail caps, and a spray-in bedliner. As ever, merely two body styles are available.

Be it the King Cab or Crew Cab, the 2017 Nissan Frontier can be had in 4x2 and 4x4 configurations. Only the King Cab can be had with the entry-level 2.5-liter inline-4 engine, churning out 152 horsepower. The more potent 4.0-liter V6 is rated at 261 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. In total, five grades are available for the Frontier: S (inline-4 and V6), SV, PRO-4X (4x4 only), Desert Runner (4x2 V6 only) and SL (Crew Cab V6 only).

Aside from competitive pricing, it’s hard to understand why Nissan USA has yet to replace the current generation of the Frontier with the third-generation Navara. With a bit of luck, however, the Japanese manufacturer will change things for the 2018 model year. If a Cummins diesel also makes the cut, then the redesigned Frontier will be able to keep its head up high against its direct competitors and its bigger brother, the Titan.
