Suzuki Motor had it rough this year. So far, a notorious fuel economy scandal and sliding shares forced the chief executive officer to step down. The slightly ugly SX4 S-Cross facelift is still unsightly, even for Suzuki diehards, but on the upside, the all-new Ignis mini sport utility vehicle is just what the doctor ordered.
This year at the Paris Motor Show, the updated SX4 S-Cross and Ignis are the highlights of the Suzuki stand. Before we cover the prettier of the two models, it should be noted that the SX4 S-Cross is already on sale in most EU markets, including the United Kingdom. Priced from £14,999 and boasting a face only a mother could love, the SX4 S-Cross facelift also prides itself on the addition of a BoosterJet three-banger, as well as a higher ground clearance.
Now that the SX4 S-Cross has been swiftly covered, let’s get down to business and talk about the real star of the Suzuki stand in Paris. Ignis is its name and, if you look closely, it’s arguably the most exciting product Suzuki makes at the present moment from a visual standpoint. Despite its diminutive size (3,700 mm long, 2,435 mm wheelbase), the small SUV can seat four at a squeeze, and it can be equipped with an efficient all-wheel-drive system.
AllGrip 4WD in the Ignis’ case is a viscous coupling system, which is designed to distribute the torque to whichever wheel needs it most when it senses that one of the front wheels is losing grip. It’s not as effective off the beaten path as the Jimny’s Drive Action part-time 4x4 system, but still, the Ignis feels more at home in the urban jungle rather than the muddy wilderness.
To go on sale in Europe in January 2017, the all-new Suzuki Ignis is powered by a 1.2-liter DualJet engine with 90 PS (89 horsepower) on tap. This mill can be matched to what the manufacturer calls SHVS. Also known as Smart Hybrid Vehicle by Suzuki, this is just the fancy way of saying the Ignis can be had as a mild hybrid thanks to an integrated starter generator, electric motor, lithium-ion battery, and regenerative braking. On the cog-swapping front, a five-speed manual and a five-speed automated manual will have to suffice.
