BMW Motorrad has updated its retro-inspired R nineT model for 2017, but hasn’t forgotten to add yet another variation to it. We’re talking about the new R nineT Urban G/S offering the same boxer feeling but in a classic enduro outfit.
The new R nineT Urban G/S is inspired by the first and legendary BMW R 80 G/S from the ‘80s. BMW previewed this model by introducing the Concept Lac Rose at the Wheels & Waves custom culture festival near Biarritz, and it looks to be almost identical to it.
A look at the R nineT Urban G/S reveals it to be the spitting image of its ancestor, and it even reproduces the latter’s color concept virtually without alteration. Just like more than 35 years ago, the fuel tank and the high-positioned front mudguard are finished in striking Lightwhite non-metallic, with a matching headlamp mask whose styling is geared entirely towards the BMW G/S style of that era.
The instrument cluster consists of a speedometer designed as an analog circular one, indicator lamps, and a two-line LCD. ABS is offered as standard while the Automatic Stability Control is an ex-works option.
Speaking of standard issue, the R nineT Urban G/S comes with light alloy cast wheels (sadly), a large enduro-style 19-inch one at the front, complemented by a 17-inch rear one, both wrapped in street tires. Optionally, you can have the off-road tires and the filigree wired-spokes rims that look so good on the R nineT platform. Other features include 4-piston brake calipers, steel-wrapped brake lines, and 320 mm front disc brakes.
Power is provided by the same 110 hp 1,170 cc flat-twin engine that now meets Euro 4 emission regulations. The 2017 standard R nineT is fitted with the same unit while getting some few upgrades too.
The non-tampered-with R nineT gets a fully adjustable USD fork and a slightly revised suspension geometry for greater steering precision, directional stability and cornering neutrality.
New wired-spoke wheels are on the list too along with a different instrument cluster, 2-in-one exhaust system, and high-end details like fork bridges made of forged aluminum with a clear anodized finish.
Finally, it’s the first time when the R nineT gets two individual paint finishes - the Blackstorm metallic/Vintage with a yellow application bearing the start number ’21’ and the Blueplanet metallic/Aluminum.
