After being introduced in 2014 and went into production for the 2015 model year, the sixth-generation Legacy is preparing for the 2016 model year. Manufactured in the US, the 2016 Subaru Legacy and 2016 Subaru Outback wagon will arrive at dealerships this summer holding a starting price tag of $21,745 and $24,995, respectively.
The main addition to the Legacy and Outback formulas is the Subaru Starlink Safety and Security features. The mid-size models come as standard with the automaker’s famous Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive system, joined by an Active Torque Vectoring function for confident grip in all weather conditions. The 2016 Subaru Legacy 2.5i is the base model, animated by a 175 horsepower 2.5-liter boxer engine mated to a Lineartronic CVT transmission.

With an EPA-rated 26 mpg (9 l/100 km) city and 36 mpg (6.5 l/100 km) highway, Subaru claims that the Legacy boasts the best fuel economy of any AWD-enhanced mid-size sedans. On the other hand, the 2016 Subaru Outback “sport-utility wagon” comes with better ground clearance, X-Mode, Hill Descent and Start Assist, not to mention the extra room offered by the boxy body shell.

Priced at $24,995, the Outback 2.5i achieves 25 mpg (9.4 l/100 km) city and 33 mpg (7.1 l/100 km) highway. Both models employ Active Grille Shutter technology, improving fuel economy by reducing wind resistance. Also available is a 3.6-liter six-cylinder boxer engine with 256 horsepower on tap. In terms of in-car fun, the 2.5-liter models come as standard with the 6.2-inch version of the Starling infotainment system. Only the Premium and Limited trim levels up the ante to 7 inches, dual USB ports and many more.

Built at Subaru of Indiana Automotive, the 2016 model year Legacy 3.6R and Outback 3.6R are available only in Limited guise. As such, we are dealing with family-oriented machines holding sticker prices of $29,945 and $33,395, respectively. All Legacy and Outback models add Lane Keep Assist to the EyeSight driving assistant, an “enhanced steering feel.” Only the Limited gets retuned dampers for a smoother ride.
