Subaru of America, Inc. is affected by Takata’s sub-standard airbag inflators as well. Succeeding announcements from the likes of Toyota, Nissan, Honda, FCA US, and GM, Subaru is informing that 81,100 vehicles are equipped with defective airbag inflators manufactured by Japanese company Takata.
NHTSA campaign no. 15V323000 doesn’t cover hundreds of thousands or millions of vehicles, but the alleged defect sure ain’t to be taken lightly. Nameplates covered are model year 2004 - 2005 Subaru Impreza vehicles built from January 28, 2003, to May 31, 2005. In addition to these, the 2005 Saab 9-2x built from February 11, 2004, to March 17, 2005, are also affected by the recall announced by Subaru of America.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration informs that the affected vehicles are equipped with a passenger-side frontal airbag made by the Takata Corp. These inflators may be susceptible to moisture intrusion that, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture upon deployment. Subsequently, the airbag inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, resulting in serious injuries or death.

Subaru promises to notify affected Impreza owners, with the dealers to replace the passenger-side airbag inflators free of charge. On the other hand, owners of the Saab 9-2x will be contacted by General Motors LLC, with the recall campaign expected to begin on July 27th, 2015. Subaru owners can contact the manufacturer at 1-800-782-2783 while Saab 9-2x owners are encouraged to contact General Motors at 1-800-955-9007.

Another way to find out more about these recalls is the National Highway Traffic Safety Administrations’ Vehicle Safety Hotline (1-888-327-4236) or by accessing the NHTSA web portal (www.safecar.gov).
