Before Holden ceases local Australian production, the company is milking the cash cow with special edition after special edition. The Commodore Black Edition is one of the better efforts, chiefly because it blends the tough persona of the Commodore VFII with style.
Available for the 2016 Holden Commodore SV6 and SS in sedan, wagon or ute forms, the Black Edition commands an AUD 1,000 premium. For that little dribble of money, Holden adds special exterior badging, black mirror caps and grille, 18-inch alloy wheels painted [you’ve guessed it!] black, Black Edition front floor mats, and contrast red stitching on the seats.

The sedan variant also boasts a black lip spoiler. Ute and sedan Commodores can be enhanced even further with optional 20-inch Baretta alloy wheels for an additional AUD 1,000.

All models boast a color head-up display and satellite navigation on top of what Holden offers as standard for the SV6 and SS: Auto Park Assist, rearview camera with Reverse Traffic Alert, and MyLink infotainment system with an eight-inch color touch screen display.

On the oily front, the Commodore SV6 makes do with a 3.6-liter V6 with 210 kW (281 horsepower) and 350 Nm (258 lb-ft) of torque. The Commodore SS, on the other hand, prides itself with a 6.2-liter LS3 V8 with 304 kW (407 horsepower) and 570 Nm (420 lb-ft).

Holden’s executive director of sales Peter Keley commented, “With Commodore Black, we’ve chosen to combine the style of those black design features with the substance of advanced technology, usually only reserved for our top-of-the-range vehicles.” What Mr. Keley forgot to highlight is that the Commodore Black Edition, due to go on sale next week, isn’t available with leather-appointed seats, not even as an option.

As a brief reminder, the Commodore will be phased out of production by late 2017. There’s no official information on a successor for the iconic model. Word on the street is the front-wheel-drive 2017 Opel Insignia B will act as a replacement, a scenario that is very likely when you think about it. Stefan Jacoby, the executive VP of GM and GM International prez, assured us that the Commodore nameplate will soldier on.
