Holden's smallest and cheapest model offered to Australian consumers is all-new for 2016. We are talking about a cheeky new Spark model, fresh off the boat from Chevrolet's Korean factories.
The model has been revealed today, along with full specs and details. It's set to go on sale in April after undergoing tests that will prove it can handle Australia’s varied road conditions.

The Holden Spark is, of course, a Chevrolet with the steering wheel on the right side. It looks nothing like the other Holdens, thanks to its split grille and bulbous eyes.

In Australia, the Spark will be sold exclusively with a 1.4-liter four-cylinder Ecotec engine that produces 73 kW, 100 PS or 98 hp. Torque is decent for an atmospheric engine at 94 pound-feet or 128Nm. It should feel significantly faster than the old Barina Spark launched in 2010, which has a 1.2-liter vacuum cleaner of an engine.

Two transmission choices will be available, namely a standard 5-speed manual and an optional continuously variable transmission.

Underneath all the glitz and glamour is a revised version of the old Spark's platform. It's slightly longer between the axles, while the 1.6-in (40 mm) lower overall height should make it balanced.

The interior features a few Opel components, but that's no bad thing. The press photos they have provided us with suggest high-end LT models will have 14-inch alloys, a three-spoke steering wheel, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility. Active safety features will include electronic stability control, hill start assist, EBD, ABS, traction control and a reversing camera (LT exclusive).

“We have been working with GM Korea since the beginning of the program and were able to collaborate to ensure the car is agile and nimble in urban environments whilst remaining composed and comfortable on the open road. Key to developing the drive characteristics, was a significant round of testing and development at our Lang Lang proving ground conducted by our engineers, in addition to giving target customers the chance to evaluate the car,”
says Holden’s Director of Vehicle Performance, Ian Butler.

Pricing for the new model is still to be revealed. However, as with its Barina Spark successor, the 2016 Spark will be the cheapest of the Holdens.
