Chevrolet SS May Get The Axe after 2017

We fell in love with the Chevrolet SS as soon as we got behind the wheel, but it seems our feelings for GM’s performance sedan will have to come to an abrupt end soon, as the SS is expected to get the axe after 2017.
While the Australian roots of the machine have determined us to adore its back-to-V8-basics character, this is also what will bring its end. Since the SS is basically a rebadged Holden Commodore, the Chevy is expected to become extinct after 2017 (we’re talking about the calendar year, not the model year) since Holden will cease production by the end of that year.

We’ll remind the move will also bring the retirement of the rear-wheel drive Zeta platform serving the Commodore and the SS. And while some might hope Chevrolet will keep the performance sedan on the menu, the sales, which haven’t exactly been pleasing, mean the SS only has two years left.

Oh well, at least the 2016MY Chevrolet SS comes with a few extra goodies

The only positive side in the piece of news is that the Chevy has received a small update for the 2016 model year. You’ll be able to spot the refreshed model thanks to its LED lighting, functional hood vents and 19-inch wheels.

Since the sedan’s exterior is an understated job, these touches can only help its identity, letting those who are non-car guys know they’re not dealing with an Impala or anything of that sort.

The engine compartment remains unchanged, which means we get the same 6.2-liter LS3 V8 churning out 415 hp and 415 lb-ft (563 Nm) of twist. Just like in 2015, you can choose between a manual and an automatic, with both offering six ratios.

Why did we enjoy the time spent with GM’s performance sedan so much? You can read all about it in our Chevrolet SS review.
