Every now and then, an automaker comes around with a model that shows the industry “best of both worlds” is an argument that doesn't only holds water in theory. Combining the effortless off-road capability of an SUV and the family-oriented attributes of an estate, the Subaru Outback was way ahead of its time back in 1994, when the first-gen hit dealers.
Fast-forward to the present day and here we are dealt with the fifth-gen Outback available, based on the sixth-gen Subaru Legacy D-segment sedan. As we were accustomed by previous iterations of the nameplate, Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive is offered as standard because it’s the brand’s bread & butter.
British customers of the Outback can choose from a 2-liter turbo-diesel producing 150 PS and 350 Nm torque or a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter petrol with power and torque outputs of 165 PS and 235 Nm, respectively. Boxer diesel engines are available with either a six-speed manual transmission or Subaru’s Lineartronic (CVT) transmission, while the 2.5-liter boxer petrol is sold exclusively with Lineartronic.
Only two trim levels are available in the UK - SE and SE Premium. Priced at £27,995, the 2015 Outback 2.0D SE manual boasts with auto LED headlamps and headlamp washers, cruise control, 17-inch alloys, a pair heated seats up front, an electrically-adjustable driver’s seat, Active Torque Vectoring, as well as a 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation and a parking camera too.
The least expensive SE Premium (2.0D manual) is a tad more costly than the normal SE. £30,995 adds, on top of the SE, amenities like a sunroof, keyless entry and push-button start, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather seats and a powered rear tailgate for added functionality.
